International Safeguarding Conference Day 1

The 2024 International Safeguarding Conference, held at the Gregorian Pontifical University in Rome, is taking place from 18th to 21st June.  Participants and speakers from a range of countries are addressing the theme is 'Safeguarding and Disability'.

The conference was opened by Fr Mark Lewis, Rector of the Gregorian University.   In his address, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin referenced 'Dignitatis Infinita'.  In the first keynote talk, Baroness Shiela Hollins emphasised the disproportionate prevalence of abuse in the disabled population, queried how inclusive our communities are, and proposed that safeguarding protocols might require adjustments to be more inclusive. In each session there are signed interpreters to support deaf delegates.
